Read more about it hr This is the best news we’ve had for some time Google has just announced that their popular photo software, Nik Collection, can be downloaded for free! It is not everyday that we get free photography software! Previously, photographers had to pay up to $150 for it! As Google continue to focus their long-term investments in building innovative photo editing tools for mobile, including Google Photos and Snapseed, they’ve decided to make their Nik desktop suite available to both Mac and Windows users as well.
Moreover, if you’ve bought Nik Collection in 2016, Google will even refund you. Good for you!
The Nik Collection consist of seven desktop plug-ins for Photoshop and Lightroom. The Nik programs are easy to use and photographers can create stunning effects through intuitive filter applications. With Nik Collection you can create almost anything; from mimicking classic cameras and creating vintage style images in Analog Efex Pro, to colour correction, retouching and creative effects in Color Efex Pro. With Viveza, you can selectively adjust the colour and tonality of an image without using complicated masks, or selections.
Then there is also HDR Efex to create HDR images, as well as Dfine and Sharpener Pro to handle noise and sharpen your images intelligently. Then there is also my personal favourite, Nik Silver Efex, which is probably the finest black and white software available today. Google will stop providing updates for its Nik Collection suite of plug-in photo editing tools. The 'announcement' comes by way of a banner at the top of the, stating that there are no plans to update or add features to the Collection. Google acquired Nik in 2012, taking ownership of its desktop apps as well as its popular Snapseed mobile editing app. The company began offering the Collection last year.

What Google did was embed the back end into its Photos app and then decide to kill the Nik many of us have loved and used since the D100 was Nikon's most current retail body. Here's a tip guys, seeing that Paint Shop Pro doesn't force you to upgrade, buy that app and save these plugins somewhere! This should allow you to keep using the app long after Google is done with it. Oh and use an iPhone or Windows Phone if you really want Google to feel your displeasure over this. I started using NIK once it became free and it is my go to editing program for HDR and Black & White.
I have it now on my external hard drive and will continue to use the Adobe CC program that lets me continue to use this great program. I believe I can have a couple of different Photoshop programs open in the cloud and bounce back and forth as I have in the past when I wasn't happy with an update that needed to be 'fixed.' Their Black & White program has long been considered the prime editing program for that type of photography. That is sad news. I use the Nik in my daily work, especially HDR. It's a very handy tool as a 'normal' processing workflow support.
Dfine and Output sharpener are a very sophisticated tools for denoising and sharpening PS won't rival. Check out my PANORAMA DIARY photo blog , many pictures there were (subtly) processed usik Nik tools. I was pleased last PS update fixed recent Nik's PS compatibility bugs, at least on MacOS X. Sadly, this news confirms it probably won't happen in the future. Hopefully, there are chances that Nik Collection will work long, but as a standalone app. I purchased the NIK collection several years ago and have come to rely on it in both my studio business and also in my teaching digital photography at two universities and at a community college. The collection contains some of the very best, well written plugins/filters.
Google has done a major disservice to both the professional photography community and the aspiring amateur photographer community. I can only hope some progressive, far-thinking person/group will pick up the collection and continue work on it. I am a long-time paid user of the entire NIK collection.
I also use most of the Topaz Labs collection as well as the OnOne suite. There are edits that can be done easily with the NIK software that are cumbersome at best in other programs. Atto ships ultra320 scsi host bus adapter for mac.
The U-point technology allows area-specific edits without touching the rest of the image, far more easily than with an editing brush. For example, in Viveza, you can edit a specific color in a specific area of the image, without knowing the actual components of that color. (It analyzes the area and 'knows' what's there before you begin the edit).
Color Efex pro allows for layered filters to be edited or removed no matter where they are in the stack; and those filters - some very unique - cover a very wide range of photographic options and controls. Silver Efex makes it very easy to understand all the components that go into a good B & W image. Why did Google buy the suite anyway? Just to get it off the market?
This news has been out for over a year. There are already reports of users experiencing crashes with new releases of OSX and Adobe CC (PS and LR).
I LOVE Color-Efex Pro and will start experimenting with OnOne and MacPhun, but it's sad to see a good product screwed like this. Unfortunately, this is a pattern with big technology companies. They buy a technology, rip out what they want, alienate the key developers (who move on) and then kill the product. Having personally been told to wipe the code on a product that a group of developers had spent five years building, I feel for the guys at Nik. I hear they've all moved on so I hope they've found new homes for their ideas, but NIK is really gone for good.
