We will mainly focus on what courting really is, the procedure, the rules to follow when courting, who the key players are when choosing a partner, and we'll compare and contrast dating in the 21st century and courting. Courtship was developed in the Elizabethan Era, the time period in which Queen Elizabeth ruled England. Courting was a very important part of the marriage process.

Normally the couples were arranged. But that mainly depended on how much money you possessed and your social status. If you were wealthy or middle class, it was likely that your parents would choose your partner. The wealthy would only ever court the wealthy.

Sometimes there were exceptions. But only if you were a man, and a member of rich family. Say if a man was in love with the daughter of another rich and high up family, you could request of the father to court her. What We Learned By researching courting, we discovered that it's a very different thing than dating today. The choosing of the partners was based very little on what the man and woman actually thought or wanted. It was mainly up to the matchmaker, the parents (especially the father) and sometimes the governesses. There was little to almost no freedom when it came to courting.

The couple could not go out on a date like we would today. Money and status was also a large factor in the courting process.

It was unheard of for a poor man to court a wealthy woman. Overall we learned that when it came to relationships in the Renaissance era it was very pre-planned and strict.
